Every year, a handful of organizations survey hundreds of association leaders about how things are really going. The studies are excellent. They are also long, and they rarely sit side by side. So we read them for you. This report brings together the most useful findings from Naylor, Marketing General Incorporated (MGI), GrowthZone, iMIS and event industry researchers, and turns them into practical priorities for 2027.
The good news first: the members who stay are still staying. In MGI’s 2026 report, the renewal rate for all members slipped only a little, from 84% to 82%. What is getting harder is everything around them. Only 38% of associations grew their membership this year, down from 45% the year before.
The first year is where members slip away. 72% of new members renew after their first year, about 10 points below everyone else, and the gap is wider still for individual membership organizations. The warning signs are usually there. They just live in different places: attendance in the event tool, email opens in the newsletter platform, the renewal date in the membership database. So nobody notices a quiet new member in time.
You have the data. Getting to it is the hard part. In Naylor’s 2026 study, 47.7% of associations say using data to make decisions is one of their biggest challenges, the first time it has made the top three. Data and strategy is also where they feel most understaffed, at 38.5%. In the iMIS 2026 study, the top challenge is that member systems and websites do not connect well. And only 4% of event leaders say pulling their event data is easy.
AI arrived faster than the plan for it. The share of associations using communication tools powered by AI often or daily nearly tripled in a year, from 12.5% to 33.5%. Only 12% are actively putting AI solutions in place.
Small teams are bringing in help. Twice as many associations now outsource their management, up from 9.9% to 22.7%. Generating revenue beyond dues is still the top challenge, for the fourth year in a row.
The full report walks through six things to put first in 2027:
- Bring everything onto one member record.
- Give the first 90 days a plan.
- Notice early instead of chasing late.
- Let members help themselves.
- Treat events as a sign of engagement.
- Use AI, with a person in the loop.
It also includes a quick check to see where you are today, six numbers worth watching with simple formulas, good questions to ask any vendor, and the full list of sources below.
Key findings
- Growing is getting harder. Only 38% of associations grew their membership this year, down from 45% the year before (MGI 2026).
- Year one is the fragile part. 72% of new members renew after their first year, compared with 82% of all members (MGI 2026).
- Data is now a top worry. 47.7% of associations say using data to make decisions is one of their biggest challenges, the first time it has made the top three. Data and strategy is where they feel most understaffed, at 38.5% (Naylor 2026).
- AI became an everyday tool. The share of associations using AI for communication often or daily rose from 12.5% to 33.5% in one year. Only 12% are actively building it into how they work (Naylor 2026, GrowthZone 2026).
- Teams are getting help. Twice as many associations now outsource their management, from 9.9% to 22.7%. Revenue beyond dues is still the top challenge, at 51.9% (Naylor 2026).
